That's an excellent idea. One technique I was taught years ago is to make your article a letter to a friend. It makes the writing less stilted. Also, we talk more openly to our friends than to a general audience, and a smooth, informal flow is the secret of good writing.

Great advice, thanks.

My advice is be concise, but provide additional resources where readers can learn more, if appropriate.

One more thing, make sure the graphic relates to and supports the content. Your post's typewriter is a good example.

Hi Paul,

Very good tips. An article worth passing along. I especially like tip #4. Admitedly I've had mixed results with DNS, but, luckily I type pretty fast. Often when I write, I'll imagine myself typing my part of a dialog with an imaginary person with whom I have a hallway conversation about "some topic"-- the theme of my post. (That's where your tip #s 1 and 2 also come in handy.) As I have this imaginary dialog, I'll begin quickly typing what I tell my imaginary friend... sometimes I'll even type all the "ums" and "uhs". Once I've taken that first pass, I'll then take a second pass and "clean" things up a bit.

Anyway, thanks for sharing these tips. Happy holidays.
